Cloudsail Making new and existing technology more intelligent

Cloudsail About

Founded in Far North Queensland, where late or wrong information has a cost.

Cloudsail is based in Far North Queensland. Its founders have seen, first hand in a cyclone, what happens when information is late or wrong. The company builds and owns its own products: software that checks the systems a site relies on are telling the truth, and helps you act on it.

02 How we got here

From labour supply to our own technology.

Cloudsail was established in November 2016 in Cairns, Queensland. In its early years it ran a commercial labour-supply business. That activity has ceased. Cloudsail now develops and owns its own technology. AI and modern modelling, including methods long used in financial modelling, now make it possible to combine far more sources of information than ever before: cameras, meters, weather and sensors. We realised the real value is in combining them to get a more reliable answer, so that is what we build, across energy, intelligent environments and interactive worlds.

03 Founders

Virginia Graham

Co-founder and director

Making the information people rely on more reliable.

Virginia lives in Far North Queensland. When the last cyclone came through, her area was hit and the flood warnings came too late. Anyone who had not already evacuated could no longer get out.

We now have remarkable tools: AI, and more information than ever from cameras, meters, weather and sensors. We should be using them for our own benefit. It comes down to one question: how do we know the truth? Is the flood coming? How much power are we really using? Is that camera showing what is happening right now? Cloudsail combines what is already there to give the most accurate answer we can get today, independent of any vendor.

She started her career in finance, on the treasury desk at ANZ and as an adviser at Salomon Smith Barney. In 2004 she co-founded a credit-licensed lending business built around how lenders actually assess risk, and she has worked in commercial lending. She was the first investor in Shareablee, a social media analytics company later acquired by Comscore. She helped commercialise PumpCX's load-testing software, sold to banks and government, and has brought further products to market for enterprise buyers. Those buyers want evidence, an audit trail and proof that a system fails safely.

She studied chemical engineering and holds a Bachelor of Commerce in finance, accounting and business economics. She built Cloudsail to stay vendor independent, so the answer it gives is the one the data supports.

Phil Riches

Co-founder and director

Phil is a co-founder and director of Cloudsail. He leads operations: coordination, procurement, experiment support and project administration.

He is a UK-qualified financial planner. In the UK he ran a restaurant business of about 125 staff.

04 How we work

Small, deliberate and evidence-led.

  • 01

    We own what we build

Our products and their intellectual property are developed by Cloudsail. We bring in specialists where a project needs them.

  • 02

    Every figure shows its source

Click any number, alert or schedule in our software and it shows where it came from: the data, the time window, how it was worked out, and whether it was recorded, estimated or simulated. You can check it, and so can anyone you report to.

  • 03

    We report results either way

Experiments have pass and fail criteria set in advance, and we keep and report the outcome whether or not it supports us.

Cloudsail is participating in CSIRO's Innovate to Grow program in 2026. This does not mean CSIRO has reviewed, certified or endorsed any Cloudsail product.
